A base isolated multi-storey building with ground-source heating and cooling.
With their old building out of action following the 2010-11 Canterbury earthquakes, the Naylor Love Canterbury team began constructing a purpose-built office for Environment Canterbury (ECan) in Tuam Street in 2013. The building provides five storeys (7,000m²) of office space with a full height atrium through the centre, a basement car park, and a two-storey cycle and locker building with space for 120 bikes.
As befits a building for the organisation responsible for a wide range of environment-related governance and services in Canterbury, the ECan building utilises the latest in environmentally sustainable features, including a ground-source heat exchange unit for heating and cooling.
The base isolated building is also seismically strong, having been built to 120% of code, with piling to approximately 16 metres below the ground surface, and more than 7,800m³ of soil excavated for the basement carpark.
The ECan building boasts a precast beam frame and an external envelope of a glass curtain wall system and GRC cladding systems. The high-end interior finishes include large areas of timber panelling in the public areas and board room, with the beautiful carpentry work completed by our trade team.
This major project was completed on time and within budget, with ECan’s 450 staff moving into their stunning new open plan offices in April 2016.
